Overview

The Wisconsin Educational Communications Board (ECB) operates satellite transmission ("uplink") equipment in Madison to facilitate the delivery of satellite feeds for public television as well as commercial and cable networks. The ECB is able to transmit to Ku-band satellites and is equipped to uplink analog, standard definition MPEG II and high definition MPEG II.

The uplink also has transmitted live and videotaped segments for national distribution. For example, the uplink has carried live interviews conducted in Madison for such customers as: PBS, CNN, NBC, FOX, CBS and ABC. ECB’s uplink is also utilized by FOX for regional hockey feeds.

Uplink Fundamentals

The first component of a successful uplink is a having either a live or prerecorded program or segment to transmit. Playbacks of prerecorded material can be handled by the ECB, and Sony--including HDCAM--is the supported tape format.

Live productions can be facilitated through studio locations at University of Wisconsin Madison and Green Bay campuses, and via WMVS studios in Milwaukee.

Arranging for an Uplink

Please contact the ECB to reserve use of the uplink and make arrangements to access or lease time on a satellite transponder (i.e., a channel on a satellite) through the ECB or your broker.
